Creating a Club
Newcomers/Friendship Clubs exist in many cities and towns across Canada. Their purpose is to welcome new residents, help them build friendships, and encourage involvement in the community.
Clubs vary widely. Some are women-only, others men-only, many have co-ed membership. They typically are to new members who are new to the area within three years. Many clubs also allow membership due to a change in life circumstances – such as retirement or the loss of a spouse. Each club sets its own membership criteria and yearly fee.
Clubs are non-profit organizations. Annual membership fees are used to cover operating expenses and subsidize activities. Most clubs hold a monthly general meeting, such as luncheons/dinners to programs with guest speakers. Activity groups are generally run by a member, and may include card games, dining groups, book clubs, theatre outings, athletic/hiking or craft groups, and many more.
Prospective members are usually welcome to attend one event to participate in an activity to see if the fit is right before joining.
